Cloud users are welcome to make their own Custom Pages, but they are instructed to contact Support to have the Custom Page(s) they create linked to their website Menu.
We create the slug ("/pagename" part of the URL that appears after the ".com"), the menu item, and then do the linking for them. This is to ensure that no duplicate slugs or slugs with incorrect characters are created and that the right page gets linked to the menu.
1. Get Information from Customer
Before we can begin work on adding their Custom Page to the menu, the customer needs to provide us with the following:
-
- Name of the Custom Page, as it appears in the Custom Pages list
- Menu Display Text - this is the text displayed in the menu that will link to the Custom Page
(This can be different from the custom page name. For example, maybe they named their Custom Page "Policies" but would like the menu item that website visitors see to say "Facility Policies".)
2. Create the Slug
-
-
- Login to Cloud, then select the customer's facility from the dropdown menu in the upper left corner of the dashboard.
- Click on Configuration, then click on Website Editor, then click on Slugs from the left side menu.
- Click the blue Add Slug button and then select Custom Page Index from the Ecom Page dropdown menu. A second dropdown named Custom Page will appear. Click on it, then select the Custom Page the customer has created.
- In the URL field, type the slug you wish to give the page. Use your best judgement here, and pick something short but descriptive. Words only, NO special characters.
💡 TIP: One word slugs are best, but if you need to create a multi-word slug, separate words using a hyphen. DO NOT separate the words by spaces. Spaces are not allowed in URLs. - Click Save to save the slug.
-
3. Create the Menu Item
-
- Display Text = the actual text in the menu that describes where the link goes
- Link To = what page the item links to
- External URL = a URL for a webpage that is not on this website, such as a blog, sister facility, auction site, etc. (will be used in the last step of Menu creation)
- Order = the order in which the menu item appears, from left to right (1, 2, 3, 4...)
- Icon = adds an icon image - Don't Use
1. Click on Menu from the Website Editor's left side menu. You'll see a list of all the existing menu items displayed. The Order column represents the order in which the menu items appear from left to right, with the lowest number being the first item on the left and the highest number being the last item on the right.Make note of the highest menu number, as you'll need that information in a couple steps.Click on the Add Menu Item button to bring up the Menu Items popup.2. Type the customer's desired Menu Display Text in the Display text field.3. Skip the Link to dropdown and type What is the URL for your facility's website?/why-us in the External URL field.4. Type 4 in the Order field.5. Click Save Menu Item to save.
4. Test
1. Open up a new tab and go to the customer's website.
2. Click on the new menu item you just created.
3. Does it go to the correct custom page?
If yes, you are done.
If it does not go to the correct custom page, you should double-check the following:
Website Editor > Menu
-
- Have you linked the menu item to the full URL for the page( ✔) and NOT the internal link(❌)?
-
- Is the URL spelled correctly?
- Is the slug in the URL spelled correctly? If used, are there hyphens present where they are supposed to be?
Website Editor > Slugs
-
- Was the slug of the custom page assigned to a different page by mistake?
- Is the slug that was created for the custom page spelled correctly?
